what is Ayurveda?
What is Ayurveda: Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word, meaning the science of life and longevity. It dates back more than 5,000 years, originating in India. Ayurveda combines ancient wisdom and practical science, and it is the world’s oldest health care system. It is not a diet fad, it’s a lifestyle. A way of living that promotes true, lasting health and happiness, in body, mind and spirit. It is a holistic approach to healing. Ayurveda doesn’t treat ‘dis-ease’, it treats the individual, to bring them back to their own, unique state of balance. It also allows each person to be their own healer, and takes that control out of the hands of a regular medical practitioner. It is true empowerment for each individual. Ayurveda is a journey and a path to lifelong health and longevity.
Dosha: Each of us is unique, and we are made up of all the elements (earth air fire water ether), just like everything else in Nature. These elements make up the three doshas, or vital energies (vata pitta kapha), that exist in all of us, forming our own, unique constitution. All of us have all three doshas, but the amount we end up with (at conception) determines our constitution (our tendencies, characteristics, looks, temperament). It’s important to remember we are not our doshas – they do not define us. They are guideposts that help us get back into balance when we have strayed, due to inside and/or outside forces (diet, lifestyle, environment, to name just a few). Keeping our doshas balanced, keeps us free of dis-ease, and brings us back to health and harmony
Agni: Agni is our digestive fire, and is the ultimate key to good health. When our digestion is happy, it allows our entire body to function well. This is not just about food; when our digestion is working well, we have a great capacity to digest not just our food, but life as well. The choices we make have a direct impact on the health of our digestion - the good and the bad (TV, music, disturbing sounds, movies, violence, poor food choices, peaceful walks in nature, meditation, healthy relationships).
What does an Ayurvedic Health Counselor do?
Ayurvedic Health Counselors are wellness professionals trained to promote health and prevent disease by applying traditional Ayurvedic principles to diet and lifestyle. They will initially meet with clients to understand their health goals and concerns. They conduct consultations, assess a client's unique constitution, or (prakriti), and imbalances (vikriti), and then provide individualized recommendations for diet, daily routines, meditation, and herbal education. AH counselors work within their scope of practice, which emphasizes education and guidance rather than diagnosing or treating specific illnesses, and can collaborate with other health professionals.
They may suggest practices like yoga, pranayama (breathing exercises), and meditation to support mind-body balance, and educate clients on how to align with natural rhythms to maintain health and prevent disease.
The focus is on restoring and maintaining balance in the body's energies (doshas), digestive strength (agni), and overall well-being. A primary goal is preventing illness by addressing imbalances before they manifest as disease.
